Music: Without the Blues

If you haven't seen these two viral video clips that show us what music would be like without the blues, you need to check them out. Pure genius.

Limited Edition: Signed Duke Robillard CDs

Collectors, here's an alert that we have a very limited number of autographed copies of Stomp! The Blues Tonight, the new CD from Duke Robillard in our Blues Collectibles Store. Sales of these discs benefit, well, Duke, but sales also help keep the stream free for everyone. When they're gone, they're gone! You can also keep that stream running by picking up a T-shirt or shopping for CDs and more in our Amazon Blues Music Store.

Blues Festival Season Rolls On

Blues Festival Season is well underway.  We encourage you to take in as much live music as you can, and our friends at the Blues Festival Guide make it easy. We've teamed up to get some of you, my Brethren, into a festival for FREE. I am giving away 40 pairs of tickets to blues festivals all across the continent, all summer long. For your chance to get on my personal Guest List, sign up over here.

Hey folks! Michelle Malone dropped by our studio and recorded a special version of her amazing song "Feather in a Hurricane". She's never played this song acoustically before now, and you can only listen to it here at TheBluesmobile.com!

On the Show and the Stream This Week:

This week on the Radio Hour, I am sitting down with Jorma Kaukonen.

Win Stuff!

Over on the Contests page, we are giving away a Delta Groove 4-Pack that includes Rod Piazza's Soul Monster, Candye Kane's Superhero, and both volumes of the All-Star Blues Revue's Live At Ground Zero. We also have some copies of Omar Kent Dykes' new record Big Town Playboy.

June 27-28, 2009

Joanne Shaw Taylor
"Going Home"
White Sugar
Ruf Records

Joanne Shaw Taylor was just 16 years old when Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics happened to see her play guitar.  Next thing she knew she was in Stewart’s band, D.U.P., playing with Stewart, Jimmy Cliff, and Prince protégé, Candy Dulfer.

Now, not yet 25, Joanne has her own terrific CD, WHITE SUGAR.  She has a powerful raspy voice.  And her guitar goes from shred to snarl to soar in the blink of an eye.  And she writes her own songs.  This young woman is going places.

Blues of the Month CD for July: Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters "Living the Light"

With Duke Robillard having been our CD of the Month for June, we stay in the Northeast in July for Ronnie Earl.

Born in Queens, Ronnie has been based in the Boston area for years, with stints with Duke's Roomful of Blues and even an Associate Professor gig at Berklee. Then of course, there are The Broadcasters. They're newest CD is called Living the Light, and we're happy to choose it as our CD of the Month for July.

As a member of the Blues of the Month Club, you'lll get a BluesMobile.com t-shirt, then a handpicked CD every month for a year. Makes a great gift.

Get full details in the Blues Collectibles Store.

Celebrating Black Music Month in June

Herbie Hancock:Head Hunters
Mamie Smith: The Birth of the Blues
Jimi Hendrix: Are You Experienced
Sam Cooke: A Change is Gonna Come

Throughout June, we shared just some great musical contributions of African Americans as part of Black Music Month. If you haven't had the opportunity, take a listen to these short documentaries that we produced for National PubIic Radio and The National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress:

Inspired in part by Sly Stone, in 1973 Herbie Hancock set out to make a funk album. With heavy use of early synthesizers, and no guitars, the jazz/funk hybrid Head Hunters became the first platinum selling jazz album in the U.S. (And if you've ever wondered, a "Gold" album in the U.S. sells 500,000 copies, "Platinum" is 1,000,000 copies sold)

Check out our previous Black Music Month podcasts featuring Mamie Smith, Jimi Hendrix, and Sam Cooke. You can also visit our sister-site ThePodcastPage.com for more great stories.
