29th Annual International Blues Challenge Crowns WinnersFebruary 5, 2013
The 29th International Blues Challenge came to a close this past weekend in Memphis, Tennessee. Over 150 acts participated in the competition this year, filling Memphis with crowds of blues enthusiasts. At the close of the Challenge, the winners were crowned at the Orpheum Theatre.
The winner chosen in the solo/duo category was Little G Weevil, sponsored by the Atlanta Blues Society, who also won the St. Blues Cigar Box guitar for best guitarist in the solo/duo competition.
The coveted First Prize in the Band competition went to the Selwyn Birchwood Band of the Suncoast Blues Society, and Selwyn Birchwood walked home with a custom Gibson ED-335 guitar and a category 5 amp as the reward for taking the top guitarist award in the band finals.
In addition to guitarist awards, Jim Liban of the Alex Wilson Band, sponsored by the Grafton Blues Association, was honored for his expert harmonica playing and took the Lee Oskar Harmonicas prize package.
