Blues Breaker: Mavis Staples

Mavis Staples got her start with her father and family as a core member of the Staples Singers. They sang gospel and soul music during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. And went on to have a string of pop hits. As a solo performer Mavis has been bringing her all ever since. For her latest album, she sent the word out to songwriters: bring me songs of joy. And that is what she got. From people like Neko Case and Valerie June. Even songwriter Nick Cave, gloomiest of gusses, gave her a joyful tune. The album is called LIVIN’ ON A HIGH NOTE. Here is a song written by Ben Harper, “Love and Trust.”
