Under the Hood: Johnny Winter on His Attraction to the Blues
Johnny Winter got famous as a world-class rock and roll guitar shredder. But then he came back to his first love – the blues. What is it about the blues? From our interview archive, Johnny Winter lets us know.
“Whatever rock & roll was doing to people, to me, the blues was even more so. I mean, you could tell that that was where rock & roll was coming from. And it was just, it was realer, more spontaneous. Immediately I wanted to hear more of it and started buying every blues record that I could find and this was before I was old enough to go to clubs. So, until I was about fifteen, records and the radio was the only outlet I had for hearing that stuff.” - Johnny Winter
